The THI method

Trauma Healing Institute Method

A faith-based approach to trauma healing

My first encounter with the Trauma Healing Institute (THI) Method came through my work with the Danish Bible Society among refugees, prisoners, and vulnerable communities in Africa and the Middle East. There, I witnessed how trauma healing groups created safe spaces where people could share their stories, process grief and trauma, and gradually rediscover hope.

These experiences inspired me to become a Certified Master Facilitator with the Trauma Healing Institute (US).

Today I teach, lecture, and consult on the THI Method in Denmark and internationally. In 2023, I co-founded the Centre for Faith, Loss and Trauma, where we train clergy and other professionals and facilitate trauma healing groups.

What is the THI Method?

The Trauma Healing Institute (THI) Method is a research-informed, faith-based approach to trauma healing. It combines biblical reflection with an understanding of trauma, grief, and resilience.

The method is used in small groups where participants explore difficult life experiences through conversation, biblical texts, reflection, writing, creative exercises, and mutual support.

It is not psychotherapy and does not diagnose or treat mental illness. Instead, it offers a safe space for people to process grief, trauma, and existential questions within a supportive community.

The materials have been translated into more than 200 languages and are used worldwide.

Topics include

  • Grief, loss, and trauma
  • Shame, guilt, and anger
  • Moral Injury
  • Forgiveness and reconciliation
  • Hope, meaning, and resilience

Moral Injury

My work with the THI Method naturally led to a particular interest in moral injury – the moral, existential, and spiritual wounds that can arise when deeply held moral values and beliefs are violated.

In 2024, I participated in the World Congress on Moral Injury, Trauma, Spirituality and Healing, organised by the Human Flourishing Program at Harvard University, where current international research on Moral Injury and faith-based recovery was presented.

My teaching builds on current international research in Moral Injury, trauma, grief, and Biblical Trauma Healing, while remaining firmly rooted in practical experience and pastoral ministry.
